KaMhola High School learner excel

A KaMhola High School learner of Emjindini was the only one of the Barberton Department of Education circuit to be called onto the podium during the announcement of the 2014 Mpumalanga grade 12 results.

The event took place at Barberton Town Hall last Tuesday in the presence of the MEC for education, Reginah Mhaule, who was supported by provincial members of the executive committee and mayors from the 18 municipalities within the province.
Bongane Mamba (19) was not only singled out by name, but hoisted the Umjindi Municipality flag higher as he was announced the top mathematics achiever in Mpumalanga.

He achieved a 99 per cent pass rate in maths. For his achievement, Mamba, who has planned to enrol for actuarial science at Wits University in the 2015 academic year, received goodies which included a Samsung Galaxy tab4, trophy, laptop and a tog bag.
“I’m very excited about my achievement. My plan was to get 90 per cent but I was surprised when I was told I’m the top mathematics learner in the province,” said Mamba, who resides in Sheba Siding near Sheba Mine.

Mamba was also the top learner at KaMhola. Despite excelling in maths, he also achieved distinctions in physical science (99 per cent), life sciences (93 per cent), agricultural sciences (89 per cent), life orientation (88 per cent), SiSwati (72 per cent) and English (78 per cent).
Overall KaMhola achieved a pass rate of 52,7, which was a decline of 9,2 compared to its 2013 pass rate of 61,9. A total of 296 learners entered to write matric in 2014 and only 279 sat for the exams with 147 passing.

Chief Funwako Secondary School in Emjindini Trust recorded the worst pass rate decline of 22,3 during the 2014 matric results. The school recorded a 62,5 per cent pass rate in 2014 compared to the 84, 8 per cent they had achieved in 2013. The school had 129 learners enrolled to write the 2014 matric exams but only 128 sat for the final exams with only 80 passing.

Emjindini High School also recorded a 7,9 per cent decline in its pass rate. In 2013, It achieved an 80,9 per cent pass rate and in 2014 a 73,9 pass rate. A total of 127 pupils entered to write the exams in 2014 but only 126 sat for the final exam, with 92 passing.
Barberton Combined School also recorded a decline of 3,8. The school achieved a pass rate of 82,9 in 2014 compared to 86,7 they achieved in 2013. A total of 35 learners enrolled for 2014 and all sat for the final exams with only 29 passing.

Overall the Barberton circuit achieved a pass rate of 67,6 in 2014, which was a decline of 9,9, compared to the 77,5 it had achieved in 2013. About 703 learners sat for the exams in 2014 with only 475 passing.

Mhaule said she was going to have a discussion that will see all circuit managers signing an agreement committing themselves that in 2015 no single circuit will perform below 70 per cent. “Circuit managers should await an invitation from my office in due course,” she said.
