KOMATIPOORT – The fire brigade of Nkomazi Municipality which is based in Malalane, returned to Komatipoort this morning as the fire which had destroyed several shops yesterday, is still smouldering.
A tavern on the corner of Lawrence and Louw Streets went up in flames yesterday at about 06:00. The fire quickly spread to adjacent stores which were being operated by Chinese nationals.
Many of the shopkeepers had been sleeping in the building and couldn’t get out. Officials of Securicon and members of the public had to break the locks to the gates to free them. Only one man sustained minor injuries.
