Pepper spray accused case discharged

A man suspected of spraying community members with pepper spray has been acquitted of eight assault charges against him.

LYDENBURG – A man suspected of spraying community members with pepper spray has been acquitted of eight assault charges against him.

Mr Mandla Sihlangu briefly appeared in the District Court in Lydenburg on Thursday, January 15. It was alleged that he sprayed residents and the mayoral committee during an IDP (integrated development plans) meeting last year at Mashishing community hall.

After months of countless court appearances, Sihlangu has received his verdict. According to Sihlangu his case was discharged due to contradicting information from the witnesses.

“The witnesses had different information about the one incident,” he said. “I knew that one day the truth about what transpired on that night, will be brought to light,” he added.

Last Tuesday was the last day for the witnesses to give their testimony and last Thursday the case was discharged. Sihlangu said he is delighted that his name has been cleared. “I always knew that this day will come and I am glad that I don’t have a criminal record because of this incident,” he added.
