Truck drives right through White River pub
A truck drove into GumTreez Pub and Grill at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre last night, destroying everything in its way. No people were seriously injured during this freak accident.
WHITE RIVER – A freight truck plummeted through a restaurant at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre last night, destroying everything in its way. The truck left behind a trail of broken beer bottles after missing a table of eight by millimetres after the vehicle veered off the road.
It was carrying empty beer bottles in SAB crates when it approached the traffic circle at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre. These then fell from the truck as it rambled straight across the island in the middle of the circle, across the open spaces into GumTreez, a restaurant at the centre.
Mr Greg Austin, owner of GumTreez, recalls what happened when the truck steered towards his restaurant. “It was between 22:30 and 23:30 when we suddenly heard a deafening noise resembling a train. The next minute, people were jumping up from their tables screaming: “Move out of the way!”
At that point, guests were still enjoying their drinks at their tables. “We even had one table with 10 people,” Austin said.
The truck burst through the hedge and plummeted right through Gum Treez’s outer dining area. It hit an antique truck which was situated on the other side of the restaurant and came to a halt.
“It is a miracle the truck did not crash into a tree or hit any of the people,” eyewitness Megan Palmer said.
