A dream comes true for former LHS learner

She took part in both the African Explosions and was the school's represen- tative as the mezzo-soprano soloist in the SASCE competition where she came second in the region.

Only a few months after Basani Furumele had matriculated at Lowveld High School (LHS) she was chosen for the University of Johannesburg’s choir, a dream she had cherished since her first days in primary school.

Basani loved to sing since she was a little girl. From grade eight she performed in musicals and has competed in the Nelspruit Eistedfodd with distinction in the Afrikaans and English poetry category.

She took part in both the African Explosions and was the school’s represen- tative as the mezzo-soprano soloist in the SASCE competition where she came second in the region.

It was only in grade 10 when she joined the LHS choir where she was a member of three operetta casts and played the lead role in 2014’s version of Shake, Ripple and Roll. At the end of last year she was awarded the best actress trophy and also received the most versatile pupil in the arts award.

She is currently a first-year student at UJ, studying human resource management where she followed her dream by auditioning for the choir. “At first I was a bit sceptical as I knew all the students who auditioned had great voices, but I still decided to give it a go. It was very tough however, as some of the notes were quite tricky”.

According to Basani she was surprised by the positive feedback from the judges and a spark of hope ignited again. Nothing could prepare her for the moment when she saw her name on the list of students who made the cut.

“When I saw my name on the list I was completely overwhelmed. It was so exciting and I couldn’t believe it at first.”

She said she would like to continue singing for as long as she can and hoped that this achievement was only the beginning of many to follow.
