Traffic on the R538 in the Mahushu area, between Hazyview and White River, is moving slowly, while police attempt to remove trucks that community members used to block the road.
The protest action started early this morning and no vehicles were allowed to use the road, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.
According to Mr Elvis Ngomane, the Hazyview Chamber of Business and Tourism’s SAPS Liaison officer, community members are complaining about the roads. Considering the fact that the R538 is still undergoing upgrades, Ngomane says it’s unclear whether they are unhappy about the main road or the roads within the settlement.
Guests of the Kruger National Park were also told that the Numbi Gate is inaccessible due to the protests. They were advised to use alternative routes and to access or exit the park using the Phabeni and Paul Kruger Gates until furter notice.
Brig. Selvy Mohlala, provincial spokesperson for SAPS, said that police are attending to the situation and the road is once again accessible. Motorists are, however, warned that they should add some time to their trip as traffic is moving slowly or use alternative routes like the R40 or Kiepersol roads.
Mohlala stated that it was not a violent protest and no-one had been injured or arrested.
