More carnage on the N4 claims lives
On Thursday morning, two people died and one was seriously injured when a bakkie collided with a truck on the N4 between Malalane and Marloth Park.
HECTORSPRUIT – On Thursday morning, two people died and one was seriously injured when a bakkie collided with a truck on the N4 between Malalane and Marloth Park.
According to a police report, the truck was overtaking another vehicle when the accident occurred.
“At about 05:30 between Marloth Park and Hectorspruit, a Mozambican heavy vehicle which was travelling from Mbombela to Mozambique, overtook another vehicle and collided with an oncoming Nissan Hardbody of home affairs.
“The latter was on its way from Komatipoort to Lindelane, transporting a Nigerian illegal immigrant,” Komatipoort SAPS spokesman Const Natacia Mbuyane, said.
According to Mbuyane, despite the fact that the truck driver attempted to swerve back into his lane, it was too late to avoid a collision. The bakkie crashed into the trailer’s rear wheels.
The driver of the bakkie, who has been identified as Mr Charles Madonsela, died on the scene from injuries sustained during the impact.
Two people were transported to Tonga Hospital by Securicon Ambulance Services.
“The Nigerian national died on his way to hospital and other victim, Mr Samson Mbokane, was airlifted to Mediclinic Nelspruit from Tonga Hospital by a provincial helicopter.
“Because of his unstable condition it wasn’t possible to transport him by road to hospital,” Securicon Lowveld manager in the Onderberg, Mr Pieter du Plooy, said.
At the time of going to print, Mbokane was still in a critical condition.
A case of culpable homicide was opened at Komatipoort SAPS and the case is still under investigation.
