MARLOTH PARK – An injured Zebra found its way to a resident’s house with a badly damaged leg. It was first presumed that building rubble had caused the tear in the animal’s leg as this had been a constant issue in the area.
This was not the case according to Ms Jayne Barlow, one of the trustees of the wildlife fund. “The injury looks most likely to occur from infighting between two zebra. It is known that they bite each other on the lower leg to showcase their dominance in the wild. These Zebra bite through the tendon with the intention to maim their opponent,” Barlow said.
The animal’s injury was primarily a display of wildlife in action. It was also something that occurred this time of the year as food and rain had been scarce with an abundance of animals in the park. Territory then played a big part.
According to Barlow the stallion was currently doing fine and the incident had been reported and the zebra was monitored by the honorary rangers in the park.
“The injury looks much worse than it actually is. We have had similar cases in the past where the injuries has been much nastier. Currently the zebra is showing no signs of distress,” she added.
She further said that if building rubble had been the cause then the injury would have occurred on the hoof. “The injury is clearly on the lower leg and is in the area where zebra usually get bitten when fighting.”
