TCM sets aside R4,6 million to repair roads

This followed after private companies and the public had started taking the matter of fixing the roads into their own hands.

LYDENBURG – Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM) is spending R4,6 million to fix potholes.

The municipality finally heard the outcry of the community and appointed a new contractor. The mayor of TCM, Mr Michael Ncongwane, confirmed this when he held a meeting with service providers last week.

This followed after private companies and the public had started taking the matter of fixing the roads into their own hands. Motorists had been raising their concerns for a very long time about their safety on the road because of ducking and diving, and the cost of damage to their vehicles because of the potholes.

LOGE constructions and Mahlangu BEHR Infrastructure Consultants would work together on this project. According to Mr Seun Mahlangu of Mahlangu BEHR Infrastructure, R1,8 million would be set aside for resurfacing and the rest would be used for patching potholes.

“We did surveillance on the roads around town. We noticed that some can still be patched, however, some need to be resurfaced since the damage is too much,” Mahlangu said.

“Viljoen Street will need to be resurfaced due to the damage on the road, the top layer has been washed away and since it is a 12-metre road we have set aside R1,8 million to fix it,” he explained.

According to the municipal spokesman, Mr Puleng Mapheto, the municipality had a budget set aside for fixing the town’s roads in the 2014/15 budget.

“As a municipality we always set aside a budget for road maintenance every time we create a budget in the beginning of every financial year,” he said.

“The community can expect the roads to be fixed by the end of April,” said Mahlangu.
