The station commander was on his way to work when he saw two suspicious-looking men walking next to the road with a big bag. He called a colleague to assist him and they stopped the suspects and demanded to search them.
The suspects fled and the officers pursued on foot. They managed to catch the suspect carrying the bag and found it contained two 9mm pistols, a CD/DVD player with speakers, a laptop and toiletries.
The suspect was then arrested and the case followed up. Upon further investigation, police found that one of the firearms was reported as stolen at Brakpan Police Station in Gauteng in January.
The suspect appeared in the Hazyview Magistrate’s Court, but at the time of going to press no information regarding the case had been available.
A manhunt for the second suspect has been launched and by Tuesday afternoon no arrests had been made.
The acting provincial commissioner, Maj. Gen. Meshack Nogwanya commended Makamu for setting such a good example and told officers to learn from the best. “Surely being a cop has a lot to do with one’s own hunch. It goes without saying that our men and women in blue can achieve a lot of success by leaving no stone unturned by searching every suspicious person they come across,” he said.
