MBOMBELA – The former provincial Hawks head’s trial was postponed in the Nelspruit Regional Court last month.
Maj Gen Simon Leroy Mapyane stands accused of five counts of fraud. He was arrested in May last year and released on bail of R1 000.
Lowvelder obtained additional information on the charges against the former provincial head of the police’s elite.
Mapyane reportedly claimed remuneration for various trips he was not entitled to. He allegedly filed a claim amounting to R2 805,84 for meeting with a state attorney in Pretoria on September 1, 2010. According to the state, he never did so.
Another travel claim was filed for September 2 totaling R 2 745,22. According to the state’s version, he was travelling in a police vehicle and was not entitled to that claim.
He allegedly claimed R2 805,84 on August 2 and 3, 2010, for travelling to Pretoria for work. The charges against him stem from the accusation that he was either not in Pretoria at all, or not there for work- related purposes.
Another claim was submitted regarding September 9, according to which Mapyane had travelled to Pretoria for a court case. According to this travel claim, he had to speak to an investigating officer. The state denied this and added another charge of fraud – in the amount of R2 805,85 – to their list.
A last alleged claim of R2 391,90 was filed for trips between Mbombela and Ogies on April 25, 2012.
This charge against Mapyane is based on the allegation that he did not travel to Ogies in a private vehicle, but used police transport and thet he was thus not entitled to this claim.
