Easter weekend spoiled for five due to accident
Five people were injured at the beginning of the Easter weekend when a taxi carrying 14 passengers collided with a Mazda sedan on Thursday afternoon.
MALALANE – The taxi had just left the rank at Malalane with passengers taking Easter gifts to their families.
According to Malalane SAPS spokesman, Lt Bheki Nkosi, there were no fatalities in the accident at the junction of Buffels Street and the N4. This area has lately seen its scourge of accidents where a pedestrian was the most recent victim, killed just a week before.
“Three people were slightly injured and two were in a serious condition. The injured were all taken to the Shongwe Mission Hospital and other passengers were examined by paramedics on the scene,” Nkosi explained.
It is alleged that the driver of the Mazda wanted to turn into Buffels Street off the N4 when the accident happened, while the taxi was east-bound.
“A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened, and is being investigated against both drivers,” Nkosi said.
He added that there had been fewer accidents during this year’s Easter weekend along the N4 than before, despite the high traffic volumes.
On Monday there was another accident at the very same intersection in which one person was injured.”
