N4 has accident and trouble-free break over Easter
The very busy N4 in the Corridor area saw an accident-free Easter period.
MALALANE – According to Ms Solange Soares-Nicholson, communications officer for TRAC, the highest recorded hourly traffic at the Nkomazi Plaza was 775 vehicles passing through the toll gate by mid-morning on Monday.
At the time of going to print, no consolidated figures were available with most people returning to work on Tuesday.
This figure is almost double normal traffic on work days. It can also be attributed to the fact that Tuesday was a public holiday in Mozambique.
Despite the high traffic volume, no major delays or backlogs were reported.
Other provinces were not so fortunate and by Tuesday morning, 23 people had been killed on the country’s roads, which in itself is a miracle compared to other annual statistics for the same period.
Local police and traffic officers were out en masse from Malalane to Komatipoort, which may be one of the reasons for the low death toll.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation, most people were arrested for drunken driving, overloading and speeding. A thousand buses were impounded countrywide for not being roadworthy and 30 000 people in South Africa went home with a fine.
