Another remote jamming incident – ensure your car is locked

MBOMBELA – A motorist of Limpopo who stepped out of his vehicle for a few minutes to shop at Mica Crossing last Monday, got a nasty surprise. When he returned no more than five minutes later and discovered that his valuables had been stolen.
It turned out that he had become another victim of remote-jamming. As most victims he initially thought that he had forgotten to lock his car, but he didn’t.
From what could be seen on CCTV footage, he had been carefully watched by the suspects before they stopped next to his vehicle in a Volkswagen Polo, hopped out and stole his camera and other valuables which had been under the seat.
Later that day, the same vehicle with three suspects was spotted, surveying other vehicles in the vicinity of McDonald’s.
But before eyewitnesses could report the matter, the suspects fled. No arrests have been made yet.
Remote-jamming incidents have lately been increasing at an alarming rate. Response manager of Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit, Mr Callum Macpherson, said it was of utmost importance not to leave valuable items in full view of passers-by.
“Incidents like these happen a lot these days, and it causes many problems. Because there are no signs of forced entry, it is difficult for the insured to prove that their vehicle was broken into and a theft had occurred,” Ms Heather Bourhill of LVM Insurance Brokers recently said. She added that up to 18 laptops had been reported stolen in one week, and those were only the cases which had been reported.
“These criminals can easily outwit security guards. But it is still important to park where guards are present to deter criminals,” Macpherson concluded.
