MEC’s child killed in accident

MBOMBELA – Mr Vusi Shongwe has been at the forefront of the battle to improve safety on Mpumalanga’s roads as the MEC for community safety, security and liaison, visiting numerous accident scenes which motorists didn’t survive. Ironically on Wednesday he was at the receiving end of this gruesome reality when his eight-year-old girl was killed by a vehicle in Ermelo.
Little Sethu Thandiswa Shongwe attempted to cross Pet Street near her home at about 16:30 when she was hit by a car. “She was certified dead on the scene,” spokesman for the department, Mr Joseph Mabuza confirmed. “As the road-safety ambassador in the province, Shongwe is very disturbed about the incident,” Mubuza added. Mpumalanga premier Mr David Mabuza conveyed his sincerest condolences to the family of Shongwe.
“One cannot explain the feeling of losing a child. Shongwe’s loss is our loss. His pain is our pain. Our MEC has been the true champion of road safety, it is indeed sad that he lost a family member through a road accident. May God give him and his family strength during this difficult time,” Mabuza said.
Members of the executive council are expected to visit MEC Shongwe’s family to pay their respects and convey sympathy on behalf of the provincial government and the citizens of Mpumalanga. The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide. Details about the funeral service will be made available in due course.
