DA protests against discriminatory Mpumalanga dress ruling

On March 31, 2015, in a legislature sitting, an ANC member of the Legislature compared a dress worn by the DA’s Jane Sithole to a dress worn by sex workers.

MBOMBELA –  The Democratic Alliance will march to the Mpumalanga Legislature to hand over a memorandum to the Speaker, Thandi Shongwe, against discrimination in the Mpumalanga Legislature today.

DA Mpumalanga Interim Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) Leader, Ms Tarnia Baker, DA Mpumalanga Chairperson, Ms Jane Sithole, DA Mpumalanga Caucus Leader, Mr Anthony Benadie and DA National Spokesperson, Ms Phumzile Van Damme, will lead the protest and handover.

On March 31, 2015, in a legislature sitting, an ANC member of the Legislature compared a dress worn by the DA’s Jane Sithole to a dress worn by sex workers.

The speaker then ruled that Sithole’s dress was not in line with the decorum of the house and proceeded to order Sithole to cover herself up. The DA will register its opposition to this discriminatory and unlawful ruling, and will hand over a memorandum to the Speaker urging better respect for the rights of women.
