Illegal dumping is of grave concern to many residents as there are several dumping spots that seem to grow by the week. A resident recently spotted a marked municipal tractor dumping waste in the wetland area in Impala Street between Essenhout and Danie Joubert street and sent in a few photos.
After investigations by the municipality, it was found that the parks section had reqested the roads and stormwater section to fill a hole next to the wetland area to make it easier to cut the grass. The hole was filled with building rubble, with gravel on top.
Bessie Pienaar, Municipal Communication officer, urged residents to take down the registration number of vehicle seen dumping waste illegally to make it easier to trace the culprit. The incident should be reported to the municipality’s environmental management section as detailed as possible.
Pienaar says the waste department has been requested to erect a “no illegal dumping” sign to deter people from future dumping.
Currently the legal central waste disposal site is in Tekwane. According to the municipality, no one is allowed to dump any kind of waste in residential areas and all residents are encourage the use the Tekwane central landfill site. Pienaar says the countil is considering establishing a transfer station in White River but the issue has not been finalised yet.
