A truck loaded with turkey drumsticks overturned on the Badplaas Road at approximately 13:22 today.
While the driver was still inside the vehicle, people started looting the poultry cargo that was lying all over the road.
Police on the scene could not do much to deter the looters from taking the meat.
The badly injured driver was taken to Barberton General Hospital.
Barberton Times spoke to the duty doctor at 17:30 and was informed that the patient will be transferred to Rob Ferreira Hospital.
Owner of the truck, Frikkie du Plooy from Gauteng said that his driver loaded the cargo in Durban yesterday (April 22) and left at 05:00.
“He was under no pressure as he only had to offload in Komatipoort tomorrow morning.”
Van Wettens from Mbombela removed the truck.
According to the tracking system in the truck, the driver stopped in Chrissiesmeer for approximately 20 minutes before taking to the road once more.
