A pedestrian was killed on Monday when a bakkie allegedly hit two women on the R40. Mr Jacques Meiring, operational head of Bossies Community Justice (BCJ) later apprehended the driver who had fled the scene.
Police arrested him. Meiring said he was very intoxicated. He explained that the women were crossing the road near Toyota at about 14:45. They were standing on the central ridge when the bakkie allegedly hit them just past the traffic lights. The one victim was crushed between the vehicle and palisade fencing. She died on the scene. Her companion sustained minor injuries.
Meiring said the driver fled from the scene on foot but was successfully arrested in the bush nearby. The traffic department was also on the scene.
Capt Dawie Pretorius, spokesman for Mbombela police, confirmed that the suspect had appeared in court on Tuesday. He faces charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence.
