Feather-brained idea is a total washout
As the crates were being washed, a member of SAPS arrived, looked at the truck, walked to the river and filled up his water bottle downstream from where the employees were washing the chicken crates. He left without saying a word.
Employees of a chicken farm got into trouble last week when they bypassed a car wash, and instead washed crates in the Nels River.
A truck driver and two passengers were spotted washing scores of empty chicken crates in the river just outside Elawini Estate last week. The driver pulled up on the rocks adjacent to the river were they rinsed each crate.
The truck belongs to Mr Leon Oostenberg of Oostenberg Farms in Polokwane, although the truck is branded with Môreson’s logo.
“I bought the truck from Kobie Fourie, owner of Môreson Eggs, three months ago. I should have taken off the stickers immediately, that was my mistake.
“I take full responsibility for the behaviour of my employees.”
Oostenberg explained that the truck was meant to pick up stock chickens from Heidel Eggs near White River, but when security saw the feathers on the crates they refused the driver entry until the truck had been cleaned.
“Feathers from outside the farm can bring illnesses onto a chicken farm,” Oostenberg said.
“My employees were ordered to have the truck washed. They informed me that they had it washed at a car wash, but they were obviously too afraid to tell me the truth.”
