Strikers in Malalane attack worker
The ongoing strike at the OVV factory in Malalane, has after a month, still not been resolved.
Striking factory workers demand a 10% wage increase, while the company is offering less. The standoff has triggered violent reactions over this period and the SAPS and a Gauteng security firm are keeping strikers in line.
It is suspected that some of the strikers were involved in an incident last week at Malalane Primary, when teachers and children were hurried to safety as unidentified men wereviolently shaking the surrounding school fence and shouting abuse at learners.
The latest information is that the strikers have severely assaulted a temporary worker which was brought in to cope with the backlog in production. Great losses have been experienced by farmers who could not deliver their fruit, due to the ongoing strike and OVV management decided to employ temporary staff in order to continue their business. The previous time temporary staff was brought it, the strikers turned violent, threw petrol bombs and stones and attacked vehicles. A driver from a guesthouse who passed by, had his vehicle damaged to the amount of R34 000.
