MBOMBELA – Finance MEC Mr Sikhumbuzo Eric Kholwane has announced that his department plans to roll out a biometric-online fingerprint verification system for government employees. This is to eradicate the existence of ghost employees on the payroll.
Kholwane announced during his recent budget speech that the project will be rolled out in the provincial departments of public works, health and education.
“It is no longer sufficient that the provincial treasury only ensures financial liquidity and timeous payments of salaries to employees.”
He said the head count was necessary but inadequate. The project is to be extended to public entities too.
“We will continue to ensure that there are no ghost employees in the provincial administration.”
He also undertook to increase exploration of alternative funding mechanisms to address Mpumalanga’s social and economic challenges.

“We can no longer continue to rely only on provincial fiscus to address the myriad of social and economic challenges. We will continue to identify and facilitate registration of possible projects that meet the criteria for public private partnership with the National Treasury and the exploration of alternative funding mechanisms.”
