MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga is gearing up its plans to roll out broadband in the province to improve service delivery. This was the key message delivered by premier Mr David Mabuza when he tabled his office’s budget recently.
“The proposed development of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Hub… will not only enhance our ability to utilise evidence for strategic planning and decision making as we evolve towards e-government, but will also position us as a ‘centre of excellence’ in terms of IT services across the public and private sectors,” he said.
Telecommunications and Postal Services Minister Mr Siyabonga Cwele met with Mabuza two weeks ago to discuss the roll out plans for broadband. It is meant to be used to accelerate service delivery and improve the lives of communities
To encourage the uptake public servants are to be trained in the effective use of the technological tools which are increasingly becoming available to them and mass literacy programmes among communities was discussed.
Cwele said, “We are focused on bringing broadband infrastructure closer to the people to improve service delivery. International best practices show that it is only through government deliberate action, like rolling out fibre to all communities, that countries can use technology for socio-economic advancement.”
