Public works to go green

The MEC noted in her recent budget speech that the departments faced a constrained budget and extreme skills shortages.

MBOMBELA – The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) intends to take “greening” into consideration in all future construction of buildings.

MEC Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa said during her recent budget speech that her department was heeding the call to come up with means of saving energy in state-owned buildings. She also revealed that DPWRT is embarking on an exercise to rationalise its operations.

“We must ensure that the targets that have been set for this financial year are met in the midst of the constrained budget and extreme skills shortages within the country and province.

“‘The implication of that meant that the department had to reprioritise its plans and activities to accommodate the shrinking budget.”

For this the provincial government needS private sector players to fund sustainable infrastructure development.

Nhlengethwa also warned contractors that henceforth government will be taking a hard line on defaulting contractors and fully enforce the terms of contracts.
