More arrests after ANC vs SACP violence

Members of the two parties engaged in a street fight ahead a planned memorial lecture in KaNyamazane in January.

KANYAMAZANE – The police have confirmed that additional arrests have been made for violence related to the street fight which occurred between members of the ANC and South African Communist Party (SACP) in January.

The incident occurred during the latter’s annual Joe Slovo Memorial Lecture which was held at KaNyamazane Community Hall on January 25.

The violence disrupted the lecture where ANC stalwart Dr Mathews Phosa and SACP provincial secretary Mr Bonakele Majuba were due to speak.

Soon afterwards member of the mayoral committee in Mbombela Local Municipality, Mr Bheki Zulu was arrested. He was due next in the KaNyamazane Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of malicious damage to property.

WO Andries Skwambane has also confirmed that Mr Themba Sheba and Mr Bhiya Sakkie would appear on charges of common assault today and tomorrow, respectively.

Mr Zankewu Khoza and Mr Michael Rametli were both due to appear on charges of assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm on Monday.
