New road centre is hazard-free

The community and many other officials came to witness this historical event.

MASHISHING – A R2,6 million brick- paved road was officially handed over by Assmang Chrome Dwarsrivier Mine to the executive mayor of Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM), Cllr Bafana Michael Ncongwane and the MEC for health Mr Gillion Mashego recently at Mashishing Health Care Centre.

The community and many other officials came to witness this historical event. The road led to Mashishing Health Care Centre and was a serious hazard to patients’ safety.

As part of giving back to the community the mine constructed the road of approximately 500 metres with paving bricks. It now connected the health-care centre to the nearest tarred roads thus eliminating danger.

Mashego said the route would make a huge difference in the lives of the community.

“About 90 per cent of the people living in Mpumalanga rely on governmental health services, and it is essential to have a good road that leads to the centre.”

The mayor of TCM said he was excited about the new road. “It is such a relief knowing that patients will be transported on a smooth road. I was afraid of the impact the road could have on patients, for instance a patient could have been shaken to death or a pregnant woman could have lost her child because of the bad road.”

“We really appreciate the work that has been done for us and we look forward to work with the mine,” he added.

According to Ms Princess Thwala of Assmang Chrome Dwarsrivier Mine, it was a pleasure working with TCM and she urged residents to take care of the property they had in the community.

“It would be a pity for me to hear that the community was protesting and they decided to burn down a building,” she said.

“When we decide which community to help first, we look at how they take care of their property. It is not worthwhile to construct something in an area known for violence,” Thwala added.
