Road users heave a sigh of relief as reconstruction of R36 commences

LYDENBURG – Motorists will be pleased to hear that the R36 (Badfontein Road) between the town and N4 Schoemanskloof intersection is finally reconstructed.
The road has deteriorated and the community had raised several concerns to the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport asking them to repair it, in fear for their safety while using the road.
According to Mr David Nkambule, media liaison spokesman for public works, roads and transport, the department has commenced with Phase 1 of reconstruction. “This stage will cover 15 kilometres of the road and a total of R120 million has been allocated towards its rehabilitation,” he said.
“The department is aware that the R36 is a very important road for tourism and mining activities in the Lydenburg area and requires new investment for repairs, against very limited funding,” he explained.
According to Nkambule the deterioration can be attributed to the heavy trucks of the local mining companies which use the road daily.
While the department is busy with the first phase, maintenance will be carried out on the other parts of the road that motorists can travel safely. “We would like to urge the road users to adhere to the road signs while construction work is under-way,”said Nkambule. The project is expected to be completed by November 2016.
