Drugs in the Lowveld: What you need to know

South Africans use twice as much dagga as the average worldwide figure.

MBOMBELA – In an attempt to address drug-related issues, the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) kicked off its annual drug awareness week yesterday.

Although figures vary, the South African Government website states that experts agree that more than 11 per cent of our country’s citizens have addiction problems. According to this site, substance abusers’ top drugs of choice are dagga and alcohol.

Cocaine is also widely used in South Africa with figures from the Central Drug Authority showing that its use increased by 20 per cent between 2006 and 2008.

The picture in the Lowveld, however, may even be worse.
