Youngsters cook up a storm on sunny day
Heidel Eggs presented a successful Kids Cook-Off Challenge this weekend. The winner walked away with a lovely weekend away in Swaziland.
WHITE RIVER – A beautiful, sunny day at Bagdad Centre created the ideal atmosphere for the first-ever Heidel Kids Cook-off on Saturday. Children aged nine to 14 slaved away behind the gas stoves to create culinary masterpieces, all in the name of family fun.
Heidel Eggs, in association with SPAR, JLL Fresh Produce and Stoep, presented the event during which kids could show off their cooking skills.
Two weeks ago, contestants received a list of ingredients with which they had to prepare a main course and a dessert.
They had two hours to make a meal which would be judged by three esteemed names.

“It’s hard to judge children,” said Estelle Roe of Junxion Marketing. She, along with Simon Sutherland of Protea Hotel The Winkler and Ronald Daintree of Realty 1, made out the day’s judging panel. “You don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.”
Rochelle Harmse raked in the title of overall champion child chef and a coveted weekend away in Swaziland for her chicken-wrapped-in-bacon main course and caramelised-pear dessert.
Earlier that day her father had been heard joking about how the family had had the same dish for dinner every night for a week as she practised for the event.
However, there was not just one winner for the day. Kenya Ngubane’s dish was the best tasting among the juniors and that of Danielle Morgan, the best tasting among the seniors.
Amukelwa Ngubane and Reghardt Liebenberg were the messiest cooks in the junior and senior categories, respectively. The best effort went to Edrich Liebenberg for the juniors and Mnqobi Shongwe for the seniors. Gabriel Burns had the best presentation among the juniors and Willie Lourens, the seniors.

Wian Potgieter’s dish was the most original in the junior department and Jarred Smuts received the most original among the seniors. The best-combination dish was awarded to Danielle Potgieter and Marcelle Smuts.
“This was the first time we presented a cook-off for children,” said Heidel Eggs representative, Leander Robbertz.
“We hosted a similar event with the Pumas rugby players last year and it was very successful, so we decided to include the young ones. It was great fun and we are planning to host it again near the end of the year.”
