Cross-country athletes compete to join provincial team

Cross-country athletes had their endurance tested during the provincial champions held at Hoërskool Rob Ferreira's sport fields on September 19.

White River Primary hosted a total of 1 047 mainstream and special education needs athletes aiming to join the provincial team. The top six in each event were chosen for the team, which will participate in the national championships in East London on Friday and Saturday, October 2 and 3.

Despite the rain, the competitive spirit of the participants of the Ehlanzeni, Bohlabela, Gert Sibande and Nkangulu districts were still high.

The events were mostly dominated by athletes of Gert Sibande and only 11 Ehlanzeni learners made the team:

Nlanhla Magagula and Enough Khoza – boys 15 years, Sandile Thabethe – girls 15, Thulane Lekhuleni and Bongani Nkosi – boys 17, Precious Ngomane girls 14, Theresia Seyffert – girls 10, Thokozani Mashaba – boys 11, Felicity Sibandi – girls 11, Emmarencia Masina – girls 12 and Meluleki Mashaba – boys 12 years.

Visitors were impressed with the facilities and complimented the organisers on the smooth running of the event. They, in turn, would like to acknowledge the Mpumalanga Department of Education, Kiaat Hospital, Coca-Cola Fortune and J&M Security for their support.
