Attempted robbery goes awry

LYDENBURG – On Monday afternoon intruders attempted to steal a vehicle in Brown Street. Fortunately for the owners the burglary went wrong and the vehicle ended up crashing into the neighbour’s fence.
According to Ivan Nel, the bakkie owner’s son who witnessed the incident, he was in the house with his sister when he suddenly heard a racket outside.
“To my surprise when I went outside, I saw the bakkie driving out of our yard but with no driver behind the wheel. Before I knew it, it crashed into our gate, drove out of our yard, crossed the road and stopped when it crashed into our neighbour’s wall,” he said.
Ivan did not see the people who tried to steal the car. “We normally put bricks behind the wheels to stop the bakkie from moving because the handbrake is broken, but when I went to check they were moved from where the car was parked and placed aside. The culprits tried to open the car through the window, but they were unsuccessful.”
“I immediately informed one of our relatives who then called my parents.”
According to his mother, Lenie Nel, she immediately rushed home when she got the message. “At least they failed to steal the bakkie but my daughter is shaken by this. It really scared her,” she said.
A few days before this incident, intruders tried to break into another house in Brown Street. A neighbour saw them standing on top of the roof of the house and alerted the owners. However, they managed to escape.
