Rape cases can decrease by taking extra measures
The local SAPS have expressed concern over the number of rape cases being reported
TONGA – The local SAPS have expressed concern over the number of rape cases being reported. This was according to a media statement issued by the station this past week.
According to the statement by Lt Mzwandile Nyambi, some of the reported cases could have been avoided. “Although some of these cases are not easily preventable, since they are committed inside the respective homes, through the police analysis it has been established that some of them can be preventable if the community takes extra precautionary measures,” read the press release.
The statement also read, “This emanates from two rape cases where a 14-year-old girl and a 24-year-old woman have reportedly been raped at Naas and KaMhlushwa respectively, at about 04:00 and 02:00 on October 18.
” According to the 14-year-old, she was on her way home from a tavern with her boyfriend. They came across two men who assaulted her boyfriend and instructed him to run away. After that they both raped the young girl.”
“Meanwhile in the other incident the 24-year-old woman was at a local garage with her sister-in-law at about 02:00 when a suspect robbed her sister-in-law of her cellphone, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect then raped the 24-year-old and fled the scene.”
In conclusion the Tonga Police Station commander, Brig Velisiwe Mdaka, pleaded with community members to take extra care of themselves.
“If it happens that one has to go somewhere at night, they should go in groups so that even if a thug wants to attack them they will be able to defend each other,” said Mdaka.
