Sonpark celebrates 20 years of success

The centre was developed in 1994 and over the past two decades it has expanded significantly, offering customers a variety of over 100 shops, restaurants, convenience and professional services.

MBOMBELA – Sonpark celebrated its 20th birthday on Thursday with a night of fun and interaction.

To the owner of the centre, Mr Kobus Jacobs, what today seems as one of the most successful businesses around, has been a result of a day-to-day contribution from various role players.

Like Rome, Sonpark was not built in a day, but Jacobs said it was fulfiling to see that which was once a dream is a reality today. According to him, Sonpark has matured.
“My wife, friends and my whole family have been very supportive. I owe them a lot,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs also used the event as a platform to thank all the key people who have been involved in Sonpark’s development over the past 20 years.

As part of giving back to those who have contributed to the growth of the business, Sonpark gave away a total of R20 000 in cash to two lucky Lowvelders.

Mr John Erasmus won R5 000 in cash and Ms Debise Coetzee won R15 000.

Jacobs said he still remembered when he acquired the land, which was once a playground, to start the business. “I faced a lot of challenges, like getting a bank loan to finance it, the town council had to approve the land before we could have it for business,” he said.

Ms Mariam Ndlovu has seen it grow like a child who started walking. She has been working at Sonpark since its inception. Jacobs also aimed to acquire more land to improve parking facilities at the complex.
