Woman dies after truck is allegedly stoned
"Police fired rubber bullets at them but it was too little too late as an innocent soul had lost her life," the eyewitness fumed.
DRIEKOP – A middle-aged woman was involved in a fatal car crash at Legabeng section on November 17. The horrific accident occurred at around 07:45 and involved a Motlokwa Construction truck and a Kia Rio.
According to eyewitnesses and other motorists who were on the scene first, striking community members of Ga Maroga allegedly threw stones at an oncoming truck of Motlokwa Construction.
“They threw stones at the truck as they wanted it to stop and torch it, unfortunately the driver lost control and the truck collided with the car driven by the deceased.”
Sources revealed that the woman in the Kia died on impact while the truck driver escaped unharmed.
“After realising what had happened, the residents, mostly from Legabeng and
Ga Maroga, fled to their homes.
“Police fired rubber bullets at them but it was too little too late as an innocent soul had lost her life,” the eyewitness fumed.
According to information at Steelburger/Lydenburg News’ disposal, the communities around the Dilokong ASA Mine had been protesting, demanding work at the mine and supporting underground workers who had been on strike since October 23.
The communities also demanded that some members of the management of the mine be fired.
The villagers wanted to protest but a strong security force from Phoenix prevented them from doing so.
Mecklenburg police confirmed the accident.
“At this stage we can confirm that the deceased was a teacher at Nakgwadi High School in Mooihoek,” Const Kgalake Mampuru, spokesman for the Mecklenburg SAPS, said.
