Top matrics to be granted bursaries
"The top 10 learners will be awarded bursaries by the department to further their education in the institution of their choice."
MBOMBELA – This year’s 56 000 matriculants will hear their fate on January 6 next year. MEC for Education, Ms Reginah Mhaule, will announce the final examinations’ results at Izimbali Boarding School in Mkhondo Local Municipality.
This is also where marking of the exam papers are currently underway. Spokesman Mr Jasper Zwane briefed journalists on the scheduled announcement of the results last week.
He said that this year’s number of matriculants was 9 000 more than that of the previous year. For six consecutive years, the province has administered clean and corrupt-free examinations.
The minister of basic education, Ms Angie Motshekga will announce national results on the 5th, paving the way for provincial announcements.
The provincial announcement will be broadcast over various radio stations in Mpumalanga. On January 13, Mhaule will also visit the school with the overall best performing learner to hand over a sponsored car to the excelling learner.
Perhaps, most significant is the fact that the results will be announced at the time when the country is rounding up the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the freedom charter that declares that “doors of learning and culture shall be open for all”.
“The top 10 learners will be awarded bursaries by the department to further their education in the institution of their choice,” said Zwane.
Zwane added that the department would honour various roleplayers in different sections of government. He also said that the education department was working on ways to improve maths and science performance in the province hence they had started a maths and science centre.
The department said it was aiming for a 10 per cent increase in performance and had not yet decided whether it would publish the results in newspapers.
