LYDENBURG – The driver of a bakkie transpoting dagga found himself on the wrong side of the law when he crashed into the driver and employees of Hops Hollow Brewery in a bakkie on the Long Tom Pass on Friday afternoon.

The Hops’ driver was travelling to town when he supposedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a mountain slope. The suspect, who had been travelling behind the Hops employee, collided with him.

Mr Deon Broekman, hazmat operator, said the staff members sustained serious head, back, neck and internal injuries.

They were transported to Lydenburg Hospital. Two of the three were, however, later transferred to Rob Ferreira in Mbombela. The driver and suspect, however, were not injured. The latter was arrested and appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Spokesman for Lydenburg SAPS, Sgt Elizabeth Mogoa, confirmed that dagga had been found on the bakkie. “Police confiscated 97 kilograms of dagga. The estimated street value is R250 000. The case was postponed to January 25. He remains in the SAPS holding cells.”
