DRIEKOP – Four passengers and a child survived a brush with death when a Volkswagen Citi Golf collided with a Toyota bakkie on the R37 on January 30 at about 07:00.

The accident occurred at the Mathipa crossing. The passengers were taken to the nearby Dilokong Hospital. The driver of the Golf sustained severe injuries while the other three passengers were slightly injured, among them a 10-year-old child. The driver of the bakkie escaped unscathed.

Traffic came to a standstill as the two lanes had to be closed to allow for paramedics to assist the injured.

According to Mecklenburg SAPS spokesman, Const Kgalake Mampuru, the bakkie was travelling to Burgersfort while the Golf was heading to Polokwane. “It was a head-on collision and we are still conducting an investigation to determine who was at fault,” he said.

At the time of going to print, the driver of the Golf was still recovering in Dilokong Hospital.

“We would like to urge the community to be patient when driving and to abide by the road laws because there are too many accidents,” said Mampuru.

There are constantly accidents on the R37 and it is regarded as one of the most dangerous roads in Limpopo. Meanwhile, residents in the area also pleaded with the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) to install traffic lights at the Mathipa crossing.

“A lot of accidents are happening here, the GTM must erect robots on the area,” taxi driver, Mr Jonathan Tlaka said.
