Fifteen-year-old medical student prescribes hard work

Promoted from grade four to grade eight for academic excellence, he passed matric with eight distinctions, aged just 14, and was admitted to the University of Limpopo's new medical school this year.

MBOMBELA – Junior Mkhombo’s story is proof that gifted youngsters can triumph despite the odds. The 15-year-old from Orhovelani High School in Thulamahashe, Buckbuckridge, is one of the youngest medical students in the country.

Promoted from grade four to grade eight for academic excellence, he passed matric with eight distinctions, aged just 14, and was admitted to the University of Limpopo’s new medical school this year.

The future doctor said he would like to become an oncologist, to help all those affected by cancer. “I worked hard to escape the township lifestyle,” he said, adding that he would like to be an inspiration for others.

Mkhombo had strong praise for one of his teachers, in particular. “Mr Richard Walusimbi taught me that I have potential and must work hard to reach new levels.

“We didn’t have a library and the lab wasn’t up to standard, but we produced good results,” he said.
