SEKHUKHUNE – Angry pupils set three classrooms alight, destroyed windows and demolished the school fence at the Tshehlwaneng Secondary school last Friday.
According to sources, the schoolchildren alleged their principal was still practicing the banned corporal punishment. Some also allegedly demanded that management of the school ensure that they got put through to higher grades after they failed last year.
“The pupils are arguing that in 2014, there was a higher pass rate at their school, and that those who failed were condoned to the next grades. They demand to also be promoted,” our source revealed.
Limpopo education department’s provincial spokesman, Dr Nedzalani Rasila said they were shocked by the incident.
“We condemn these acts of criminality, vandalism and arson. We are confident that the law will take its course,” said Rasila.
Asked about the allegations, Rasila said they have not received any complaint from anyone about corporal punishment at the school.
“We are not allowing any corporal punishment in our schools, those who have evidence that it is practiced at Tsehlwaneng are allowed to lay complains at the department.”
On Tuesday February 23, classes were still suspended at the school. For this article and more grab a copy of the Steelburger/Lydenburg News this Friday.
