Drivers force man accused of stealing to sweep the taxi rank

The drivers said they did not want to beat him up. "We are scared to sjambok him because when we do, we will be arrested for taking the law into our own hands. We are pleading with the police officers to get rid of these addicts in our town," they added. Speaking to the paper, the alleged thief claimed he had stolen the stove because he had no food. The stove and the gas cylinder were recovered after they had both been sold for only R50.

BURGERSFORT – With more and more nyaope addicts terrorising shoppers in the CBD, another user was given a harsh punishment by the Inter City taxi drivers.

On February 23 an alleged addict from Mashamothane Village had to sweep the whole Inter City taxi rank at the Morone complex.

This was after he had allegedly stolen a gas stove and container from one of the informal traders at the taxi rank. The drivers told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that they always gave the alleged thief jobs in order for him to make a living.

“We give him small jobs and sometimes food, but he still continues with his ugly deeds of stealing.”

Nyaope is a volatile concoction. The mix can include anti-retroviral (ARVs) drugs designed for Aids patients, rat poison, third-grade heroin and cleaning detergents like Vim. All this is often laced together with marijuana. It only takes a matter of minutes before users get high.
