Residents get in the way of road works

KELLYSVILLE – Last Tuesday morning, angry residents stopped road construction in the area, alleging that workers were unlawfully employed by the local municipality.
According to them they are sick and tired of nepotism in the selection to employ workers who are currently constructing the road in the area, and they will not stop interrupting the work until something is done about the situation.
According to Ms Thulile Smit from Kellysville, this was the second time that the municipality did something of this nature to residents. “We don’t know most of the people who were appointed. Some are not residents of the village. They are from Mashishing. “When a substation was constructed some time ago in Kellysville, exactly the same thing happened.
“During public meetings we were informed that the municipality would make sure that they employ the majority of people from Kellysville, but to our surprise it did not happen. To make it worse, people were employed via messages to report for duty,” she said.
“What we want is change and fairness for our community. This road project is in our area and our unemployed people deserve to get the jobs.”
After several meetings and disagreements the workers were allowed to continue with their work, however, they were informed that if their demands were not met, the protest action would continue.
