Cosatu to launch protest action at Nkomazi Toll Plaza

Cosatu members will reportedly be protesting on Monday to raise awareness of the recent increase in toll fees.

Motorists should take note that the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is planning a protest action at the Nkomazi and Middelburg Toll Plazas on Monday (April 4) between 09:00 and 14:00.

According to a notification Trans African Concessions (TRAC) received from the organisation, the protests are aimed at raising awareness of the increased prices of toll fees. This follows an increase in toll fees across the country on March 1.

TRAC stated that the toll fees are regulated, approved and gazetted by the Transport Ministry and are adjusted annually in accordance to the Consumer Price Index.

Although TRAC does not foresee any disruptions due to the protests, protocols and procedures will be implemented to ensure that as little disruption as possible occurs.

“While TRAC acknowledges and respects people’s right to protest, we vehemently condemn any acts of intimidation or violence during such rallies and trust that such will not occur during these marches. As the safety of our road users and employees are paramount to us, we have also engaged the SAPS and relevant emergency authorities to ensure that the road, and our facilities in the vicinity of the protests remain safe during the protest action,” a press statement from TRAC read.

TRAC apologised in advance for any disruptions or inconveniences and urged motorists to contact the help desk on 080-087-2264 or 082-881-4444 for inquiries, information or to report accidents.
