LYDENBURG – Motorists on the R36/Badfontein Road will be delighted to hear that construction on it is almost complete with only road markings, ancillary work and clearing up to be done.
According to Mr David Nkambule of the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, phase one of the project covered 10 kilometres on a part of the road, 18 kilometres from the Mbombela turn-off and 28 kilometres from the Lydenburg turn-off.
“The overall cost for phase one is about R119 437 098, inclusive of design and supervision costs. Construction is due for completion at the end of this month.”
Nkambule said road users are still urged to continue to exercise patience and caution while driving in the construction zone. “The department would like to extend its appreciation towards road users for their willingness to observe and adhere to all road signs and instructions during the construction period and hope the same good driving behaviour can be exercised during the subsequent phases of rehabilitation.”
The R36 is a provincial route that connects the N1 (between Louis Trichardt and Polokwane) with Ermelo, via Tzaneen and Lydenburg. It is co-signed with the N4 for 50 kilometres between Machadodorp and Patattanek. It used to extend further south past Ermelo to Amersfoort, but this is now designated as part of the N11.
