SDM honours renowned leader

STEELPOORT – The Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), acting in accordance with its policy of support to traditional leaders, unveiled the tombstone of well-known chief Kgoshi Arthur Mampuru.
The auspicious event was held at the tribal house on May 29. It was attended by dignitaries from the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) including mayor
Mr Ralepane Mamekoa, Limpopo premier Mr Stan Mathabatha, MEC for education
Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe and a host of traditional leaders from every corner of the province.
Speaker after speaker described Mampuru’s generosity as he helped in ensuring freedom was brought to South Africans.
“He was so instrumental in the fight against apartheid, even our late international icon, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela recognised his contribution immediately after he was released from prison by referring to him as Commander Kgoshi Mampuru,” Kgetjepe said.
He was born on May 19, 1910 and died on the May 27, 1993.
He was buried on the June 26 that year. Mampuru is being recognised by government as one of the struggle heroes, whose contribution to wars of resistance started in 1938 when he was installed as chief of Bapedi baga Mampuru.
The unveiling of the tombstone attracted thousands of attendees from all corners of the country. The ceremony was characterised by cultural clothing, food and traditional sorghum beer.
