MALALANE – The NG Malelane hall was packed as families travelled from all over Nkomazi to attend Beacon College Primary’s annual cultural evening. The aim was to showcase the different cultures represented in the school.
Pupils from grades one to six recited poems and presented speeches on respecting culture, what their culture is about and values such as respect and tolerance towards others.
Groups also sang songs in both English and Afrikaans to showcase their good grasp of languages.
The grade threes presented a drama on Cinderella, but adapted the storyline slightly. The story communicated the moral that beauty is skin-deep and that kindness and righteousness are good values to have.
The grade fives’ drama mixed a variety of fairytales such as The Three Little Pigs, Red Riding Hood and Snow White. Even Spiderman made an appearance.
Lethando, the grade six group’s African version of Cinderella, incorporated many contemporary cultural references and instead of ball gowns, the girls were dressed in traditional Swazi outfits. Through the story, pupils urged the audience not to abuse children.
This was followed by a great cultural dance by a group of girls that had the audience ululating.
The concert was concluded with the singing of the national anthem by the grade sixes.
The school is proud of its learners’ performances and hopes to host an even bigger and better concert next year.
