Promised Burgersfort hawker stalls are still not completed
"It's been more than two years and we are still struggling. No one from the municipality and the steering committee bothered to come and tell us about the progress.
BURGERSFORT – It’s been two years since the Red Ants demolished hawker stalls in town, and Greater Tubatse Municipality made a promise to construct better and more-efficient market stalls.
According to the vendors, the municipality promised them that the stalls were to be rented for R120 per year and were going to be completed in less than a year.
“It’s been more than two years and we are still struggling. No one from the municipality and the steering committee bothered to come and tell us about the progress.
Stalls have also been constructed in Praktiseer. Some are occupied by vendors.
“The municipality gave us keys for the stalls, there was no official handover made to us by GTM. Although the roofs of the stalls are leaking, at least we make a living selling from them,” said one vendor.
The spokesperson of Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM), Mr Thabiso Mokoena, did not reply to queries at the time of going to press.
The second phase of the stalls is currently taking place at Eddie Sedibe Street next to the Maputha Ditshaba building.
