MALALANE – Three people, including a toddler, were killed instantly and five others were injured when a double-cab bakkie overturned on the N4 on Monday night.
According to Mr Joseph Mabuza, spokesman for community safety, security and liaison, it is believed the driver lost control of the vehicle at about 23:00 but the exact cause is yet to be determined.
The driver and those who were injured, were rushed to Shongwe Hospital for treatment and local police are currently investigating a case of culpable homicide.
The department’s MEC, Mr Vusi Shongwe, urged motorists to be cautious, especially at night when visibility is a challenge and said that they should assist the government in reducing injuries and loss of life. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
In another incident at about midnight on July 9, the driver of an Isuzu died near Komatipoort, also after losing control of the vehicle.
It is suspected that the occupants were travelling to Mozambique when a tyre burst, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Mr Almando Dlhamini was pronounced dead on the scene, but his four passengers were not seriously injured.
A case of culpable homicide was opened at Komatipoort SAPS.
