MBOMBELA – The charges against 12 traffic officers, who were charged with corruption and defeating the ends of justice in April, were dropped last Monday. According to Hawks spokesman, Capt Lucy Dineo Sekgotodi, a language issue caused a request for the case’s postponement, which was denied before the case was removed from the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court’s roll.
Lowvelder previously reported on the sting operation that led to the arrests of Mr Vali Thabo Mokgope (35), Ms Precious Phindile Mdluli (37), Ms Fikile Shabangu (29) from Acornhoek; Mr Selvy Peace Ngobeni (36), Ms Sebenzile Siwela (40), Mr Thabo Succeed Mashigo (29), Mr Molao Reuben Moreku (51) from Bushbuckridge; Ms Delco Mashele (33) from Sabie, Mr Alfred Simon Mbatsane (39) from KaNyamazane, Ms Nomcebo Nomsa Mthombeni (39) from Masoyi, Mr Albert Muzi Motha (45) from Daantjie and Mr Cleopas Vusi Mabuza (35) from KaBokweni.
They were apprehended after motorists alleged that they had taken bribes in various areas of the province. According to Sekgotodi, these reports sparked investigations. Safety and security spokesman, Mr Joseph Mabuza, said the 12 had been under investigation for an extended period and, when the time was right, warrants were issued for their arrest.
After the case was struck from the roll, Sekgotodi emphasised that this did not mark the end of the prosecution process, as J175 summonses will be issued, requiring the accused to appear in court again.
