Town hawkers have still not received their stalls

"The municipality chowed the money and now they want to hand over an incomplete project. This is a disgrace to us, the residents of the town. I cannot allow this," Tjatji said.

BURGERSFORT – The hawkers stalls that were due to be handed over to street vendors in the CBD are still unoccupied.

The Greater Tubatse Municiplaity (GTM) had planned to hand over the stalls during July as part of the municipality’s Mandela Month activities, but it was prevented by the South African National Civic’s Organisation’s (Sanco) Tubatse chairperson, Mr Jackson Tjatji.

Tjatji told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that Sanco was not going to allow GTM to hand over the stalls as they were unfinished.

“The municipality chowed the money and now they want to hand over an incomplete project. This is a disgrace to us, the residents of the town. I cannot allow this,” Tjatji said.

This led to a serious altercation between him and some of the hawkers. They said Tjatji was a stumbling block in them accessing the stalls.

“We are tired of selling our products in the sun; we want the municipality to give us the stalls. There is no use for us not to allow the handover as thieves are stealing the equipment.

“We will go the extra mile in putting security measures in place to ensure the stalls and our products are not damaged or stolen,” the hawkers told the paper.

GTM spokesman Mr Thabiso Mokoena said the municipality would engage with the relevant stakeholders and the new date for the handover would be announced in due course.
