
MBOMBELA – A man was gunned down in cold blood in front of midday shoppers as a woman also died from unknown causes at the Promenade on Thursday.
According to police spokesman Sgt Gerald Sedibe, the incidents occurred around 11:45. At the time of going to print, it was unclear what the circumstances of the shooting was. “We are getting conflicting reports at the moment, so we will confirm the motive behind the shooting is not yet known,” Sedibe said.

An eyewitness, Ms Bianca Rossouw, said she was standing on a balcony when she saw people lining up to use the ATM. She said the victim was with a young woman. “A man came towards them and grabbed the girl’s handbag. When the older man tried to stop him, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him twice. He then fired into the air. We were terrified,” she said.
A female police officer, who was at the shopping centre, witnessed the shooting and chased after the fleeing suspect. “She caught
up to him and immediately arrested him,” Sedibe said.
Mr Jacques Ainslie from Hi-Tech Medical Services attended to the gunshot victim on the scene. “He had one gunshot wound to the upper right chest and another on the lower chest,” he said.

Ainslie said the man had lost a lot of blood, but was stable when he was taken to Rob Ferriera Hospital.
Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit operations manager, Mr Callum Mac Pherson told Lowvelder on the scene that people at the pharmacy notified emergency personnel that a woman had collapsed near the shooting victim. He said some of the employees tried to attend to her, but she died on the scene.
Police confirmed that they would be doing an inquest into her death. Sedibe said a case of attempted murder has been opened and police are still investigating. The suspect will appear in court soon.
